American Abstract Expressionism of the 1950s
An Illustrated Survey With Artists' Statements and Biographies

OUTSTANDING ACADEMIC TITLE ~ CHOICE, 2003
"This excellent publication builds on the earlier [above] publication. It has broadened the scope to include artists from throughout the US,
rectified...omission of African American artists... and concentrated on 88 artists...excellent layout and superb photographs. Highly recommended"

2005 WRITERS NOTES BOOK AWARDApril 19, 2005

"Herskovic overviews American abstract expressionism with this hefty volume of plates. Beyond the names, you'll immediately recognize (Pollack,  DeKooning, Gorky, etc.) this alphabetically arranged set takes a fair and complete look, including commentary from the artists.... We like Kline's ideas on size and space and also when DeKooning says, "spiritually I am wherever my spirit allows me to be." American Abstract should be a  fixture in libraries and the homes of the lovers of the form."

"Researchers will seek out this well-designed selection."
 ~Library Journal August 2003.

 Readers' opinion
It is an important contribution to the study of Abstract
Expressionism. 58 painters and sculptors are featured. Each of
these artists has 2 works shown (full page) one abstract and
one figurative work and an artist's statement. The reproductions are excellent. There is also a Bio and a
listing of solo exhibitions and group exhibitions for each of these artists. An amazing amount of research and love went
into this new production of the New York and Californian
Schools abstract and figurative expressionism. You can see that
these schools were actually a bonafide community of artists. This 254-page book was sumptuously printed and has
a 12 x 9 1/2 inch format. The book has a black cloth binding
and a handsome dust jacket with ALL the names of the
listed artists. This platinum dust-jacket has black and red lettering which pops-out and is a stunning tribute to the artists.

Albert Kotin Abstract Expressionist of the 1950s

"To know Al Kotin is to come face to face with a man whose life and work is a continual manifestation of integrity. Actually, I believe there is no other way."
                                                                              Mathias Goeritz

Alexander Calder wrote in 1968:
“As long as there are people such as Al Kotin, there is no danger to art.”

An incredible monograph!
By Stootz, Art Lover on September 20, 2016
Format: Library Binding
This isn't my first review of a NY School Press book. I get incredibly excited and anxious when I hear a new title comes out. Ms. Herskovic's books are incredibly accurate due to her research. It is not what "Joe tells Susan". It is digging for the truth. What appears is a sumptuous, fact-filled, tour de force. I have always heard of Albert Kotin but had no idea of the breadth of his work. From his easel paintings and murals with the WPA to his breathtaking Abstract Expressionist canvases, you get to see the journey of an incredibly gifted artist. You do not have to know that he was one of the major artists of the New York School and participated in all the Annuals. Just turn the pages and you know you are in the midst of greatness. Large color photographs, over 350 pages, and artist's statements, letters from his famous artist friends, fine portraits, and period photos, take you on a journey through the difficult hard-working life of a very special talent!

CLARION REVIEW ART / EDUCATION
Clarion Rating: 5 out of 5
"This book does much to elevate Albert Kotin into his rightful place alongside the other greats of abstract expressionism.

Marika Herskovic has gifted the art world with a well-researched monograph on Albert Kotin, a Russian-born American artist who was one of the first generation of abstract expressionists working and exhibiting in postwar New York City. Albert Kotin: American Abstract Expressionist of the 1950silluminates its subject’s prolific artistic output, and details his relationships with other New York School artists and writers during this exciting period.
.........Herskovic’s survey of Kotin’s oeuvre is not only a well-documented work of scholarship, but it also heralds the importance of this previously fairly unknown modern American artist. It includes an unearthed 1964 New York Herald-Tribune review of a one-man exhibition of Kotin’s work at the Byron Gallery: “Though neglected, Kotin’s statement has the unmistakable ring of truth and conviction.” This book does much to elevate the artist into his rightful place alongside the other greats of abstract expressionism."
